Saint Teresa of Calcutta Permanently in the General Calendar

The Vatican announced already in late winter the Pope’s decision that Saint Teresa of Calcutta – that is, Mother Teresa – is to be permanently entered into the Roman General Calendar. This is the liturgical calendar on which the local calendars of particular Churches are based.

The Optional Memorial of Saint Teresa of Calcutta will henceforth be celebrated on 5 September, the anniversary of her heavenly birth. The Dicastery for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, in its decree, emphasises Saint Teresa’s spiritual heritage:

“By living the Gospel radically and proclaiming it boldly, Saint Teresa of Calcutta bore witness to the dignity and glory of humble service. By choosing not only the lowest place but by being the servant of the least, she became a model of mercy and a true icon of the Good Samaritan.”

The decree also recalls her interior call to serve Christ through the poorest of the poor:

“Jesus’ cry on the Cross – ‘I thirst’ (Jn 19:28) – pierced Saint Teresa’s heart. Her whole life was devoted to quenching this thirst, Christ’s longing for love and for souls, by serving Him among the poorest of the poor. Filled with God’s love, she radiated that same love to all.”

The possibility of adding Mother Teresa’s memorial to local calendars has existed for several years, as was done also in Finland. The new decision simply ensures that this memorial will be added to all local calendars on 5 September. Her memory will also hold the first place in the Roman Martyrology on that day.

In Finland there is currently a contemplative community of the Missionaries of Charity in Oulu.
