Prayer for Pope Francis

For Private Use

Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church, and Saint Joseph, Protector of the Church, pray for our Holy Father, Francis.

Saint Peter, the first pope, who denied Christ three times but in the end followed His footsteps all the way to martyrdom, you left the Church and each of your followers an example of faithfulness, willingness to serve, and true shepherdhood.
– Pray with us for our Holy Father, Francis.

Saint Francis, mendicant friar, you showed unparalleled care and love for all of creation and wished to reveal the true, merciful face of God even to the poorest of the poor. Pope Francis took his name from you, and he has followed your example in fulfilling his pastoral ministry.
– Pray with us for our Holy Father, Francis.

Saint Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Jesuit order, from your sickbed you grew to become “a faithful son of the Church” and gave the Church and the world a way to grow in the knowledge of spiritual life. Your order is also Pope Francis’ spiritual home.
– Pray with us for our Holy Father, Francis.

Saint Pope John XXIII, you convened the Second Vatican Council so that the Church could find a new way to live in a world that had been ravaged by wars and where many new ideologies had taken root. You desired that the Good News of Christ would take an ever stronger place in people’s hearts.
– Pray with us for our Holy Father, Francis.

Saint Pope Paul VI, you renewed the papal ministry in a way that brought Peter’s successor closer to the people, hoping that, in this way, the message of faith would gain more ground in our modern world.
– Pray with us for our Holy Father, Francis.

Saint Pope John Paul II, you had an astonishing ability to speak to people of all cultures and guide them into the communion of the Church. Through your determined efforts, you defended human freedom and dignity in an outstanding way in the face of many threats.
– Pray with us for our Holy Father, Francis.

Beloved Pope Benedict XVI, in your pastoral ministry, you placed your trust in the Church’s liturgical and theological heritage and continually drew strength and courage from it. From your deep faith and trust in God’s providence also came your decision to resign from the papacy when you no longer felt able to carry out your office as well as you wished.
– Pray with us for our Holy Father, Francis.

Let us pray.
God, our merciful Father, receive our prayer for our Pope Francis, let him recover from his illness, and grant him many more years to live. Let us always trust more in Your promises and teach us not to fear the future. Strengthen us constantly in the hope that we may always live in communion with You and in the certainty that one day, together with all the angels and saints, we will have the opportunity to behold You face to face. Amen.
