The international Catholic news service EWTN News has interviewed Bishop Raimo Goyarrola about the Catholic school planned for Helsinki. In the interview, the bishop corrects reports that have circulated internationally claiming that the school has already opened.
“The school will open when we are certain that everything is ready,” Bishop Goyarrola says. “We had hoped to begin already in August this year, but after careful consideration, we have decided to postpone the opening, as several important issues still need to be resolved.” The current aim is to open the school in August 2027.
In international news reports, the school has incorrectly been described as Finland’s first Catholic school. Catholic schools have existed in Finland since the Middle Ages, and several were still operating in the 20th century. The project is therefore about reviving Catholic education in Finland after a long hiatus.
