EU Bishops to Gather in Brussels 1–3 October

The bishops of the European Union will meet in Brussels for the COMECE Autumn Assembly on 1–3 October 2025. The meeting will reflect on the role of the EU in the international context, marked by instability, the lack of multilateral dialogue, and growing military and economic rivalry among major powers. Key topics on the agenda include migration and asylum, as well as defence, the rule of law, the protection of fundamental rights, and the social impact of emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence.

The event will also feature the participation of EU Commissioner Magnus Brunner, European Parliament Vice-President Antonella Sberna, and European Commission Special Adviser Klaus Welle. The Nordic Bishops’ Conference will be represented on this occasion by the Bishop of Helsinki, Raimo Goyarrola, who also serves as Vice-President of the Conference.

COMECE (Commission of the Bishops’ Conferences of the European Union) was founded in 1980 as the body bringing together the Catholic Bishops’ Conferences of the EU. Its mission is to maintain dialogue with the EU institutions and to introduce the Catholic perspective into EU policies in order to promote the common good and human dignity. The COMECE Secretariat, based in Brussels, focuses particularly on issues of justice, social and economic affairs, external relations, religious freedom, migration, the environment, ethics, as well as education and youth policy. The President of COMECE is Bishop Mariano Crociata of Latina-Terracina-Sezze-Priverno.
