What does unity mean? When we look at everyday life, we see that unity exists in those families and workplaces where there is love. There can be no unity without love. Sometimes family members are very different, perhaps from different countries, yet through love they learn to live together. The Triune God is the best example of love in diversity.
We especially need to reduce feelings of hatred, because they separate us from one another. If I do not love, it is better not to comment. If I speak without love, there can be no communion. Love cannot be limited to one chosen group.
Unity is difficult because sin exists in the world. Sin weakens love. We Christians speak about sin not because we want to dwell on it, but because we want to recognize it and remove it from our lives. The problem is that we easily see the sins of others and think that only they are guilty. This is difficult, but we remember that “The Lord does not see as man sees: man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus spoke about how we can be blessed – that is, truly happy. He taught us to understand that it is hard to know another person’s thoughts, but that we can do much within our own hearts.
